The way into the trade. An apprenticeship is a paid job with structured training attached. In New Jersey the electrical path to a journeyman license needs 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of Related Technical Instruction (RTI). Four steps: meet the basics (18, high school diploma or GED), complete a pre-apprenticeship, apply to registered sponsors union and non-union, then work the hours. Find programs through the U.S. Department of Labor partner finder and the New York State apprenticeship directory. ETA is a pre-apprenticeship: 7 months, 50 hands-on modules, OSHA-30 and SST-10, plus 144 documented RTI hours you can present to a sponsor.
